Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is IslandInfo?

The idea behind IslandInfo is to serve as a shared repository for the kind of local knowledge which is invaluable in delivering the best quality local news in such a unique patch.

It's the nature of news that nothing stays the same for very long - but when that applies to the team which publishes the news, it can severely hamper news production efforts.

The Channel Islands' various traditions, quirks, and long-running stories are often explained in newsrooms by passing information from one journalist to another, but as time goes on and longer-serving team members move on to new pastures, the pressure mounts on those who remain to bring people who are either new to the patch or new to journalism altogether, up to speed.

IslandInfo doesn't replace in-house training, but aims to help ease pressure on newsrooms by guiding anyone who needs it through the essentials of reporting or broadcasting in the Channel Islands.

  • How can I access the Info Hub?

While some of the information on this site is free to access (as it is already available from other sources), some premium resources like long-form story explainers and the audio pronunciations library are invitation-only.

News organisations which use IslandInfo are expected to contribute to its library of resources to help keep the site up-to-date. If you are interested in finding out more, contact [email protected].

  • Who created this site?

IslandInfo was created by Alex Watson, a journalist and massive geek who has been covering Channel Islands news since 2017 but left the newsroom full-time at the end of 2023 to join the team at Aiir, which specialises in creating cool software for broadcasters including the CMS which powers this site.
